Iris Lamp
This project was completed in a furniture class called Design for Production. In this class we got to design an object with the intent to create it in multiples. The goal was to not only purchase off the shelf parts and make parts ourselves, but also work with outside a manufacturer. It is called the Iris Lamp due to its' fins which can constrict to change the amount of light shown. This piece is intended to be used as a floor lamp. The overall retail of this product would be $315 with a production cost of around $175.
The fins are made from laser cut 1/16" thick polystyrene and they have aluminum grommets in the corners. The inners elements consist of a hand turned base and top canopy. There are also off the shelf components from Grandbrass, and an acrylic tube.
The original concept for this lamp was created during the Design Principles II class in spring 2022. This concept was at the time just a form study for a lamp that would be able to increase or decrease the shown light by constricting the shade fins.
